Okay wtf?
Ever since I was a kid I always wondered about the weather here. I’m 28 now and I’ve lived in San Diego since I was 2. I remember having to go to school in September and it would be blazing hot in the afternoons. I’d leave for school on foot and keep track of which plants had frost on them and which didn’t on my way in. I’d huff it in two pairs of socks, and a sweatshirt and make it to school having not broke a sweat since it was so cold. That afternoon I’d complain to myself as i’d walk by the same plants on the way back, dry as a bone, carrying a pair of socks and a sweatshirt in my backpack.
Now having dealt with it for so long, I decided to graph it. I setup this graph in cacti years ago (if you want the perl script that grabs the data, let me know it calculates it on a zipcode basis). I wrote a perl script that scrapes weather.com for a zipcode, then greps out the windspeed, temperature and humidity. Pity this graph was broken during the fires - that would have looked real weird.
Everyone I always talk to at work on the phone asks me how ’sunny san diego’ is. I tell them its always a roll of the dice with the weather here. I tell them one day the weather just pokes its head up, like a kid with ADD whos paddleball toy just got boring, leaps to his feet, and runs off to the bathroom, grabbing the cat along the way, to give it a bath in the toilet.
Once can only sit down and shake ones head, commenting only “.. wh…. wh…. what .. the HELL?!”
Admittedly, had I chosen meteorology as a profession, or if some day I find a way to get free real time 24 hour historic weather satellite feeds I’m sure my wtf’ing will change to ‘holy crap’ing.
